About/Biography

I play in orchestras, a lot of chamber music, and I am fascinated by contemporary music. I try to find a balance between my studies, orchestral projects, life in emigration — and simply myself. It is not always easy, but I love and treasure every step along this path.

Kateryna Hut was born on 8 February 2003 in Ukraine. Raised in Kamjanez-Podilskyj, she received her first musical education at Education Centre No. 9, where she came into contact with music early on. At thirteen she began teaching herself the double bass, and at fifteen she entered the Khmelnytskyi Music College in the class of Valentyn Soboliev, where she earned her Junior Specialist Diploma. During those years she was section leader in both the college symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra, performed as a soloist, took part in national competitions and regularly attended masterclasses — among others with Volodymyr Hrechukh and Mykola Shakhovyi.

Her achievements have been recognised repeatedly: in 2021 she won 1st prize at the Ukrainian competition “Franko Hügelland”, as well as 1st prize at the competition named after Yuri Hilobokov. In 2022 she took 2nd prize at the VII Ukrainian Competition for String Instruments.

In 2022, as part of a large benefit project, Kateryna Hut travelled to Switzerland and Germany with the All-Ukrainian Youth Jazz Band. That stay opened the door to studying at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, where she played actively in numerous ensembles and completed the PreCollege course. Despite her intensive engagement with jazz, she chose to continue her path as a classical musician.

Since 2023 she has studied at the Hochschule der Künste Bern with Professor Ruslan Lutsyk. She is deeply committed to her studies, devotes herself intensively to chamber music and attends masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Dorin Marc and Janne Saksala.

As an orchestral musician she performs with various ensembles across Switzerland: she is section leader in the Jugend Sinfonie Orchester of the Bern Conservatory, in Orchester Variaton and in Orchester Giovanni.

Contemporary music holds a special place in her work. She has taken part in projects with Beat Furrer, performing his “Akusmata” and his Clarinet Concerto under his direction. Most recently she appeared in a performance of Mathias Spahlinger’s “Doppelt Bejaht”. Alongside her orchestral work she plays a great deal of chamber music and works regularly on solo repertoire.
